These Are a Few of My Favorite Things… A Look Back at 2012

Favorite Things

I have no idea where 2012 went. I know it’s a sentiment echoed by many but, seriously, I feel like I just started to remember to write 2012 on checks and now I have to start all over with 2013. (which becomes increasingly more difficult with each passing year)

While I used to end each year with a long list of resolutions, I’m not one to make them anymore. In the past, the new year was going to bring new resolve to go to the gym every single day, maybe even twice a day. I was going to eat nothing by healthy, leafy greens for three months. I was going to write more letters. (as a note, I use the computer so much that signing my own name on my prints stymies me at times so that was a pretty silly resolution). Then there was the best one of all… I resolved that I would follow through with my resolutions.

The older I get, the more I realize that life requires more than a promise, once a year, to do better (although, as always, I do promise to be a better, more consistent blogger, in 2013). It’s a complex series of adjustments needed to avoid the everyday obstacles that pop up along the way. It’s like one of my favorite quotes from yes, I’ll admit it, one of my favorite movies, “Better Off Dead”…

“Go that way… really fast. If something gets in your way… turn.”
So, instead of listing off everything I resolve to do better in the new year, I thought, instead, I would share some of my favorite things from 2012 (in no particular order as they are all my “most favorite”). A recap, if you will, of my favorite memories and finds from the past year.. Check them out after the jump!
(just a side note – I am not a paid spokesperson… I just love them that much)

Spotlight On… Modish Vintage on Etsy

Those who have been following my blog know that I’m in the process of redecorating my “new”ish apartment with a mix of fun vintage finds and new, more modern pieces such as my sofa from Room & Board.  Decorating doesn’t have to be expensive. Spend the bulk of your decorating budget on getting a few really well-made, classic pieces like a sofa and some tables. Pair them with some fun, eclectic vintage finds and you don’t have to break the bank to live in style!

With the warmer weather approaching, I’m looking forward to heading out to the Kane County Flea but in the cold, blustery off-season (ok let’s face it… all year long) I scour Etsy for great vintage additions to my place.

Recently I came across a wonderful shop on Etsy, Modish Vintage, hailing from the Pacific Northwest and just had to spotlight it. Take a peek at the cool, vintage shoe mold that I purchased from Modish Vintage a couple of days ago. Isn’t it fun? It adds just the right pop of color and goes quite nicely with the distressed red box I recently added as well.

I can’t say enough great things about the awesome customer service Modish Vintage provides and certainly can’t wait to add more of their items to my collection.

Check out more of their items here.

Enjoy!

It’s Hip to be Square…a Gift Guide for the Geek in All of Us

"Mimi's Glasses" a pen and ink illustration by NanLawson at Etsy

Can you name every single character in every single “Star Wars” movie (and I do mean all of them)? Can you list off five ways to defend against a zombie attack without even thinking? Do you come out of a “Star Trek” movie arguing about the laws of physics? (or even better, can you speak Klingon?)  Are you like me and have a mad “nerd-crush” on Sheldon from “Big Bang Theory?” Then you might be a geek… and there’s nothing wrong with that. Repeat after me… NOTHING wrong with that.

As an out and proud geek I felt it my duty to pull together a gift guide for the nerd in all of us. How awesome are the robot notecards by creativeapples from right here in Chicago? Ohh do I covet these vintage 50s glasses from vintage50seyewear.

Check out each of these awesome shops and remember, it’s hip to be square!

Enjoy! (and live long and prosper…)

Sterling Ring with Square Button by quenchmetalworks on Etsy

…OK, admit it, you know what I’m talking about and it brought a smile to your face. The two combine together in an explosion of salty, sweet magic…

Neutrality: Rustic Earth Tones… a Treasury at Etsy

Beige Brown Pearl Flower Bib Necklace by mojospastyle at Etsy

I love Autumn for all the rich, beautiful earth tones it serves up. Autumn also starts to make me think about cold weather, starting a fire and curling up on the couch with a good book and a warm, soft afghan. The colors in my latest treasury remind me of that.

Neutral, but not cold, tones, pale and soft with an understated warmth. There are so many favorites in this treasury it’s impossible to name just one… check out their shops and you’re sure to be delighted.

I Can’t Believe it’s Not Butter… a Treasury.

"I Love You" by michelemaule on Etsy

You can always tell I haven’t eaten breakfast when I pull together a treasury whose theme has anything to do with food. And, while today is no exception, I also pulled these lovely finds together because I love the color combination of butter yellow and teal. So fun and lively yet so elegant at the same time.

Can you guess how much I want those nesting bowls by whitneysmith? Gorgeous!

Be sure to check out each Etsians shop because they have a number of great finds…
