Photo of the Day- “The Guest House”

"The Guest House" - Tracey Capone Photography

I must have passed this motel at least one hundred times because I decided to stop and take a photograph. Blink while you’re driving down Lincoln and you’ll miss The Guest House Motel but, once you see it, you can’t help but love the charm of this old sign. I adore the crazy, fountain-like lights spraying out of the top and the gorgeous blue of the sign itself.

One of the fantastic things about Chicago is all of the amazing, old signs all over the city. One of the sad things about Chicago is that these signs are a dying breed. I certainly hope this one stays around for years to come.

Enjoy!

Photo of the Day- “Embrace”

"Embrace" - Tracey Capone Photography

I think my favorite sign that Spring has, well, sprung, is the dogwood blooms. I love how the papery, delicate sepals  gently cradle the smaller inner flowers. (The common misconception is that the larger part is a flower.  They’re actually called “bracts” and protect several smaller flowers on the inside, similar to the green sepals that protect other buds before blooming)

I love how the tips of the creme colored bracts have just the slightest but of burgundy at the end, as if nature was using Photoshop to “burn” the edges to give them definition. More than anything, I love the overall structure of a dogwood, especially when shot as a monochrome image like the photo of the day, “Embrace.”

I wanted to give this a bit more definition by adding an espresso tone to the overall picture and I love how this turned out. The creme colored sepals in stark contrast to the bold, inner flowers; the variations in the leaves and the branches. Mother Nature gave us a wonderful subject when she created dogwoods, don’t you think?

Photo of the Day- “Creme Brulee”

"Creme Brulee" - Tracey Capone Photography

I promise, I did not intend for that title to rhyme… but hey, I’m a poet and didn’t even know it. (is this thing on?? [tap tap])

Today’s photo of the day is “Creme Brulee,” one of my newest photos from Paris. Now, if you have been following my blog you know that one of my great weaknesses is an excellent creme brulee and there was, obviously, no shortage of them in Paris. In post production, I started to notice how the buildings in this shot had colors and flow very similar to that of a creme brulee and I wanted to bring that out. The creamy, vanilla  goodness in the middle, the caramelized sugar all around the top.  Hmm, I wonder if I have time to whip up a creme brulee before starting the day.

Enjoy!

Photo of the Day- “Single Iris”

"Single Iris" - Tracey Capone Photography

The iris has always been one of my favorite flowers. I love how the petals flow like watercolor, the various shades blending in to one another like liquid. I wanted to capture this feeling with today’s Photo of the Day, “Single Iris.”

I loved how the purple and creme of the petals flow in to the beautiful sage green of the stem giving the photo an almost ethereal feeling, like floating clouds of ink in water.

This newest piece can be seen here among many other new pieces in my gallery.

Enjoy!

Meet the Artist- Amber Alexander of amberalexander at Etsy

"Nuthatch" by Amber Alexander

If you’ve had your eye on the treasuries I’ve been posting, no doubt you’ve seen this month’s “Meet the Artist” artisan, Amber Alexander, included in some, dare I say, most of them. I’m not the only one…If you’re on Etsy on a regular basis, you’ve also seen her work on the front page time and time again, and for just cause… it’s wonderful.

I’ll admit, I have always wanted to be able to paint; as far back as I can remember. While I’m your typical, right-brainer in every other way, alas it has never been. (I’m left-handed, isn’t that supposed to be a guaranteed trait of my people; excelling at creativity in all forms??) I’ve even gone so far as to buy all of the necessary tools only to find out that, at best, my work can be qualified as bad abstracts. So, I’ll stick with photography and design as my creative outlets…

This is one of the many, many reasons I love Amber’s work. Whimsical, colorful, sweet and simply divine, Amber’s work never fails to make me smile (and dare I say the teeniest bit jealous while I’m attempting to paint a dog…errr monkey… um maybe it’s a worm??).

So, without further adieu, meet Vermont’s own Amber Alexander after the jump…

The Duck Ate My Homework… A Photoshop Tutorial

Ever since I posted this picture on my site, I’ve had people asking me how I got the duck to hold the photograph in his mouth. My answer? Magic. OK well only if you consider Photoshop magic… which I do. Using a good mix of some PS hocus pocus and some imagination I got the dog, I mean duck to “eat my homework.”

This tutorial will provide you with the step by step details as to how you too can get a farm animal to “eat” something it shouldn’t. (a note, no animals were harmed in the making of this tutorial)

While you may not have a need for a duck to eat a Polaroid, the basic principles of the tutorial will teach you how to use simple masking to create something similar.  (Please note, this tutorial is assuming a basic understanding of Photoshop) There may be many other ways to get this duck to hold the Polaroid in his mouth but, for me, this was the best and easiest way for me to approach it. This fun and easy tutorial starts after the jump…

I Can’t Believe it’s Not Butter… a Treasury.

"I Love You" by michelemaule on Etsy

You can always tell I haven’t eaten breakfast when I pull together a treasury whose theme has anything to do with food. And, while today is no exception, I also pulled these lovely finds together because I love the color combination of butter yellow and teal. So fun and lively yet so elegant at the same time.

Can you guess how much I want those nesting bowls by whitneysmith? Gorgeous!

Be sure to check out each Etsians shop because they have a number of great finds…

Autumnal Fire- a new metallic print

I love Autumn, especially here in Chicago where it typically starts to get cool early enough that you get a “real fall” and get to see some changing leaves.

New to the gallery is “Autumnal Fire,” a square format, metallic print of an abstract of a large oak tree with the most beautiful orange, red and yellow leaves. Taken at the “magic hour” just before sunset, looking up was like looking in to a fire. I love how the branches flow in to one another like the darkest part of a fire, with the leaves lighting up the photograph from within.

Enjoy!
