Photo of the Day- “Pensive”

"Pensive" - Tracey Capone Photography

The climb to the top of Notre Dame is daunting; I would venture to say more so because the line just to get in takes longer than the actual climb. That said, the wait and the climb are totally worth it. Get to the top and you will see some of the most famous of Gargoyles including the one in today’s Photo of the Day, “Pensive.”

Both decorative and functional (prior to the invention of the lead drain pipe in the 16th century gargoyles were a very popular drainage system for many a building) these gargoyles are both scary and fascinating at the same time. If you make your way to Paris, make a point of visiting Notre Dame on Cite Island by the Seine, in the center of Paris; you won’t be sorry.

Enjoy and wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

Photo of the Day- “The Bistro”

Walk through the streets of Montmartre and you won’t be hard pressed to find a wonderful scene like that in the Photo of the Day, “The Bistro.” It’s filled with wonderful little cafes where you can sit outside, enjoy a glass of wine and just watch the passersby heading up to Sacre Coeur.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be sitting there right now?

Enjoy!

Photo of the Day- Paris Rooftops No. 1

"Paris Rooftops No. 1" - Tracey Capone Photography

I will be the first to admit, I hated anything math related when I was a kid. It wasn’t that I couldn’t understand it, I would have just rather had my nose in a book than trying to figure out the cosign of the perpendicular of the tangent or whatever we were supposed to be learning (I can add, subtract, multiply and divide to figure out my checkbook… I’m golden)

I do however love geometric patterns, especially those created by abstracts of everyday things you would least expect… like, say rooftops? Parisian rooftops, and Parisian architecture as a whole, is very unique and very identifiable. Many of the buildings have these amazing slate blue rooftops with, dare I say, the most adorable vibrant orange chimneys atop the beautiful pale creme of the building itself. They create the most amazing abstract patters when viewed from above.

The Photo of the Day, “Paris Rooftops No. 1″ is actually one fourth of a photo I took from the Eiffel Tower looking down.  Looking out from the tower, you will see miles and miles of these beautiful rooftops, creating zig zagging patterns and an amazing mosaic that is simply breathtaking.

Enjoy!

Photo of the Day- Le Chauffage

"Le Chauffage" - Tracey Capone Photography

I’ve branched out… With this photo of the day, I decided not to photograph just the door but the entire side of a building. How could I not though? Look at how beautiful the honey brown wood is on this building?? Now, having grown up with a house full of dark and ever so fancy 70s wood paneling (yes, that’s me and my dad), I am not a fan of this indoors but outside? Gorgeous. Especially when surrounded by the rustic cobblestone and the beautiful sites in Montmartre.

Today’s Photo of the Day, “Le Chauffage” (French for “Heating”) is of a lovely storefront I came across while walking around the area immediately surrounding Sacre Coeur. Based on the translations, this is a heating and ventilation repair shop and, frankly, this is the prettiest heating and ventilation repair shop I have ever seen.

At this point, having seen my other Montmartre pics like “No. 31,” “Chez Marie,” or “No. 69,” you might be wondering to yourself, “Is there a single plain, unremarkable spot in Montmartre?” I can honestly say no… if you go to Paris, and you plan a trip to Sacre Coeur, definitely schedule in some time to walk around the neighboring area because it will be time well spent… and don’t forget your camera. (and your gym shoes because it’s pretty much like walking around San Francisco)

Enjoy! Happy Fourth of July to all of my American readers…Have a safe and happy holiday!

Photo of the Day- No. 45

"No. 45" - Tracey Capone Photography

By now you know my little secret… I’m obsessed with doors. Evidence of this can be found here, and here, well and here as well. Now, well, I’m not ashamed to admit it, I’m adding windows to that obsession.

How can I not be? Look at the beautiful, pop of vintage color on this fantastic shuttered window I came across in Montmartre. The crackling teal paint against the butter yellow of the stucco. How about the additional shutter upstairs? Isn’t the ghostly pattern it left against the wall neat? How many years must that shutter have been opened and closed, through all sorts of weather, to create that?

Trust me, this obsession won’t stop here. I’m working on several other photos I took of doors that I’ll be posting soon and oh… shhhh, don’t tell anyone… I came across an entire neighborhood here in Chicago with some doors that would put even Montmartre to shame. (that said, if I don’t post a blog for a while it may be because I’m in jail for standing outside people’s homes taking photos of their doors… someone bail me out??)

Enjoy and have a fantastic weekend!

Photo of the Day- “No. 3″

"No. 3" - Tracey Capone Photography

I can’t get enough of these doors. I am pretty certain I have more photographs of doors from my trip to Paris and London than I do anything else.

The unique moldings, the various stages of distress and patina of the wood, the colors. When I saw the beautiful aquamarine of this door and the surrounding wall, I was mesmerized; it was gorgeous. Nevermind the detail surrounding the door: the scroll work, the frame, the very cool slanted tiled doorstep. This definitely had to become part of my imaginary “Door Coffee Table Book” immediately!

Enjoy!

Photo of the Day- “Creme Brulee”

"Creme Brulee" - Tracey Capone Photography

I promise, I did not intend for that title to rhyme… but hey, I’m a poet and didn’t even know it. (is this thing on?? [tap tap])

Today’s photo of the day is “Creme Brulee,” one of my newest photos from Paris. Now, if you have been following my blog you know that one of my great weaknesses is an excellent creme brulee and there was, obviously, no shortage of them in Paris. In post production, I started to notice how the buildings in this shot had colors and flow very similar to that of a creme brulee and I wanted to bring that out. The creamy, vanilla  goodness in the middle, the caramelized sugar all around the top.  Hmm, I wonder if I have time to whip up a creme brulee before starting the day.

Enjoy!

Photo of the Day- “Ride”

"Ride"- Tracey Capone Photography

I’ve listened to the song of the same name at least a thousand times. Cary Brothers voice, the lyrics, the melody; just the overall dreamlike quality of all of those together make me stop whatever I’m doing and daydream about riding down a long open road on the back of a motorcycle. What? I don’t have a license to operate one so someone else would have to drive it; even in my dreams there is a semblance of practicality. (perhaps Jon Hamm has a license to operate a motorcycle??)

Mind you, it doesn’t have to be a motorcycle, riding around the streets of Paris or Venice on a Vespa will do just fine. When I came across this one on the streets of Paris near The Sorbonne, with the cafe in the background, the wonderful cobblestone street, the song immediately popped in to my head. (only with a handsome Parisian driving it… I think Jon Hamm was on location somewhere)

I loved the pop of crimson red against the backdrop of the white stucco wall and the greys and greens of the cobblestone. I was equally pleased when I realized just how much I love how this photo coordinates with “Chez Marie” and some of the other Parisian reds in my collection.

Check out this photo and more in my online gallery here.

Enjoy!

"Ride," "Chez Marie," and "Rouge" - Tracey Capone Photography

Photo of the Day- Punchbuggy… Rouge!

Rouge- Tracey Capone Photography

Do you remember playing that game as a kid? See a Bug, punch the person next to you and call out “Punchbuggy [insert color here].” Now, some of us had siblings who took the opportunity to punch hard without repercussions from the parents because, after all… it was a game right? (a note, my brother and I are both in our thirties and he still tries to get away with that)

My photograph of the day is “Rouge” of a Bug we came across as we were walking around Montmartre. I stood out immediately because, aside from the fact that it was parked next to this amazingly colorful wall of graffiti, it was so spotless and shiny and perfect; so,  of course I had to take a picture of it!

I love the fun pop of pomegranate red that this photograph brings with it. The chrome of the bumper, the teal in the license plate… you know how much I love color right? This picture was screaming to be taken. Check it out below with some of my other new fun rouge-themed prints.

Enjoy!

Photo of the Day- Chez Marie

"Chez Marie" - Tracey Capone Photography

Walking around Montmartre reminds me of walking around the back canals of Venice; you never know what you’re going to come across but you know, whatever it is, it’s going to be beautiful.

In stark contrast to the nearby run down, dirty buildings of the Red Light District surrounding the Moulin Rouge, Montmartre is filled with beautiful old homes with colorful facades (check one out here), cobblestone streets and amazing cafes such as this one, Chez Marie.

I’ll just quote directly from my description of the photograph on my site, “Monmartre is known for it’s rich history of artists, writers and philosophers. I can just picture them, sitting at this adorable cafe, discussing the world’s issues, writing the next great novel or sketching passersby.”

If you find yourself in Paris, you can’t pass up the opportunity to take the Metro out to Montmartre. Not only will you get a beautiful view of the city from high atop the hill but you’ll be amazed at the beauty right there in front of you.

Enjoy!
