Photo of the Day- “The Cove”

"The Cove" - Tracey Capone Photography

The last several days have been downright, “Autumny.” Yes, that’s right autumny. I think the period just after summer ends but before Autumn truly raises it’s hand and says, “I’m here” should be known as autumny. It was cool but not too cool, at night, it was actually a bit cold but not enough to put the heat on yet, and, most importantly, I got to wear a sweater. (It’s what I live for when it comes to the weather)

Today’s Photo of the Day, “The Cove” was shot on an “autumny” day like the last few only a little further in to the season when the leaves had begun their seasonal change. It was shot at Cade’s Cove in Tennessee, taking the drive through the Smoky Mountains. (and yes, I went to Dollywood on that trip as well… you can’t go to Gatlinburg and not visit Dolly).

It was a beautiful day, full of beautiful autumnal flora and several different species of fauna. The leaves did not disappoint and the trip through the Smokies was one of the highlights of my short stint in Tennessee.

Enjoy!

Happy Father’s Day Photo of the Day- The Sunday Drive

"The Sunday Drive" - Tracey Capone Photography

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, grandads, father figures, and anyone else celebrating today!

Today’s photo of the day, “The Sunday Drive” is a skip down memory lane for me as I think back to Sunday nights during the spring and summer, driving back from The Shore (I’m from Philadelphia… it’s “The Shore”).  My brother and I were in the backseat with the dog,  my parents were up front with  Phillies game on the radio, my dad cheering or jeering at the announcer’s play by play. RIP Harry Kalas

Sadly, we didn’t ride home in a cherry red vintage Ford, it was actually any number of hideous 1970s station wagons. When I spotted this old car while driving around Nashville a couple of years ago, I couldn’t help but imagine a time when an entire family might pile in to this car on a Sunday, going for what my mom calls a “bealy ride” (don’t ask… I have no idea the origin of that one :) ) on a warm summer night. Would they be passing places like the Heart O’ Chicago or maybe heading to a fair to ride the Ferris Wheel?

I will never forget those Sunday drives between New Jersey and PA. What about you? What fond Dad-related memories do you have?

Enjoy!

Photo of the Day- “Dogwood”

"Dogwood" - Tracey Capone Photography

One of the original offerings in my shop is also one of my favorites: “Dogwood,” taken at the Cheekwood Botanical Garden in Nashville, TN. Walking along the aptly named Dogwood Path, I came across these beautiful butter yellow and pink dogwoods and loved how they almost seemed to be reaching out from the tree as if reaching for the sun from their shaded area.

Enjoy!

Musings- Getting Ready for My Website

I always envy those people who have the discipline to do those “365 in 365″ blogs where you take one photo a day for 365 days and write about it. I tried it once… I got to about day 7… that was three years ago.

I am much better off jotting a random post, musing about whatever I might be working on, or, for that matter, thinking, at the time. That said, I thought I would take a quick break and swing by the old blog to write a quick post. Hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend thus far and, for those that are lucky enough to have a three day weekend (like me, YAY!) I hope you’ll be doing something fun.

It’s been a busy few days here on the blog… glad people are really liking the Little Planet Project I posted! I plan on posting more and more like it! I will respond to everyone’s comments but please don’t be offended if it’s not immediate. (occasionally I stop to sleep :) )

How to Survive Photographing Children Without Losing Your Cool…

Whoa! I finally updated my portraiture page, check it out…jeesh! Took me long enough right?

I love portrait work, especially when kids are my subjects. Now, mind you, not every child goes to a portrait session willingly; dare I say, most won’t. Even those that do may prove to be a challenge greater than Everest so it’s important to be armed with a few tools to save the day, not the least of which is a sense of humor. Here are a few of my tips for making the most of your time when photographing children:

New Creation- The Monochrome Botanical Series

"Monochrome 1- Gardenia"

As far back as I can remember, I have loved black and white photos for their understated beauty. Beauty aside however, as I’ve discussed in earlier posts (and thus won’t bore you again with all the scientific mumbo jumbo about brain synapses and color assignment), I believe it’s also due to the lack of color which forces your mind to process the photograph in a way much different from a color photograph.

I especially love monochrome botanical photographs. It’s  easy to look at a picture of an orange poppy and say it’s beautiful, however it’s mostly due to the beautiful orange color nature provided it. Remove that color and you’re forced to look at the lines and curves of the flower itself and, quite frankly, in my mind, Mother Nature is a true artist.

My Monochrome Botanical Series is an ever-growing series of many of her best works. I am lucky enough to come across so many beautiful subjects in my daily life, that I’m excited about what’s to come. The series, as well as others, can be found here, in my online gallery.

Enjoy!

Going to a Good Home- “The Cove”

Heading off to a good home (all framed up and matted) is one of my newest pieces, introduced to my gallery this week. “The Cove” is a shot taken at Cade’s Cove in Tennessee on a beautiful fall day! Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) I didn’t get to see any bears but the deer were out in full force. If you have a chance to stop by Cade’s Cove during the autumn months, I highly recommend it!

“The Cove,” a square format print, printed on premium archival paper, is available in several sizes, along with a number of other new pieces, in my online galery found here.

Wishing everyone a happy Sunday!

What I’ve Learned…my first 3 months selling.

"Reflection"

December 4th marked my third month selling my work on Etsy and it made me stop to think about what I’ve learned over that time.

My decision to start a shop on Etsy was actually made quite spontaneously. While on vacation from my day job, dreading the idea of the week ending and having to go back to the daily grind, I decided to take a leap and make a go of  selling my photography online. After fifteen years in the corporate world, I needed to do something that allowed me the possibility of one day being  my own boss but also doing something I love and I was so happy that a venue like Etsy existed to allow me to do that with low startup costs. Understanding that, while the decision was spontaneous, my online success wouldn’t necessarily be, I sat down and mapped out a game plan; a game plan which, admittedly, is now on its umpteenth revision.

It’s been a long three months with lots of late nights and weekends glued to my computer, and, admittedly, frustration, but it’s been three of the best, most revitalizing three months I’ve had in a long time; it’s also been a tremendous learning experience. As of today, I am on my sixty-fifth sale, have buyer feedback that makes me quite proud and  I’m happy to report, have already had my first return buyer. I don’t claim to be a guru on selling, I still have plenty to learn, but the list of what I’ve already learned is a mile long. In the interest of keeping it simple, I wanted to share just a handful of those tips and reminders that I think can help anyone, regardless of what type of shop you have or how long you’ve been doing it.

New Creation- “Line of Sight”

My latest offering is called, “Line of Sight,” one of many photos from my trip to Ireland. The shot is taken across the river from the Temple Bar area of Dublin and treated with actions to create a soft pastel, vintage feel. I especially love the abstract feel of the photo.

The print is one of many new offerings in my online gallery. Printed on premium Lustre paper, it’s a fun print  sure to add a cool vintage feel to any room.
